Perhaps you have looked at how you manually test your application and sorted through all of your tests to select some good candidates for automation. You’ve selected an automated testing tool and have started converting some of your manual tests to scripts. But is the extent of automated testing just to change manual tests into automated ones? Now that you’ve embraced automated testing, what can you do now that you couldn’t do before?

With the release of TestTrack 2009, we added a really great plug-in architecture to allow for integrating 3rd party reporting tools into your TestTrack installation. With this users can create and run reports directly from their desktop client, just like a native report. Today I want to highlight the SQL Server Reporting Services integration we have, to show you how easy and seamless it is to provide users with customized reports.

Recently I wrote a post on the .MySCMServerInfo file, and I mentioned that one of its uses is the IDE integration. In this post, I am going to break this down a little further, and explain the Visual Studio integration with Surround SCM in more detail. For more information, read the Surround SCM-Visual Studio integration instructions or watch a quick video of the integration in action.

You’ve probably seen and used regular expressions before, even if you’re not aware of it. When you search for all your digital photos (*.jpg) or list all files starting with the letter “a” (a.*) you are using a pattern language known as regular expressions, or regex. You may also not be aware that you can also use regexes in your QA Wizard Pro scripts to perform tasks, such as validating field data or verifying results, and also to ignore dynamic data in properties used as search criteria.

One decision you may find yourself having to make when beginning automated testing is selecting which of your tests to automate. Automating all of your tests may sound appealing at first, but is both difficult and impractical. Some tests are better suited for manual testing while some make excellent candidates for automated testing.
Share on Technorati . del.icio.us . Digg . Reddit . Slashdot . Facebook . StumbleUponMy colleagues and I have presented several different ways to interface TestTrack with other systems, mostly using the TestTrack SDK. If you want to create a simple data interface, there is another option: Email.

One of the key strengths of Seapine’s suite of tools is that they can adapt to many methodologies. One of the tasks that I am often faced with is adapting our tools to a client’s methodology. Some clients use the tried and true waterfall method, others use SCRUM, others use a combination of various methodologies, while other clients don’t use a specific methodology (which is why they asked for our help in the first place).
Which one is the most popular? Does it depend on the size of the team? Does it depend on the industry?

In part 1 of this article, I looked at raw performance numbers of the TestTrack SDK. Interesting data but no pretty pictures!
We saw the performance differences between IIS and Apache on the Windows server. If you graph the results though, you’ll see that the difference is very minor.

Chart 1: Apache vs. IIS in calling getRecordListForTable, timing for entire query

We recently released an upgrade to our software configuration management solution, Surround SCM. A few of the more notable new features in Surround SCM 2009.1 are the following:
- Support for storing all data in Oracle databases. Surround SCM now supports Oracle, MS SQL Server, and PostgreSQL as data storage options.
- Windows Explorer and Mac Finder integration, which lets you access Surround SCM commands directly from the operating system without launching the Surround client.
- Microsoft Office 2007 integration so you can manage documents in Surround SCM directly from Office 2007.
- Dreamweaver CS4 integration lets you manage Web site and Web application assets in Surround SCM without leaving the Dreamweaver CS4 IDE.
Here is a more complete list of the new features in Surround SCM 2009.1.
Share on Technorati . del.icio.us . Digg . Reddit . Slashdot . Facebook . StumbleUponRecently there have been a couple posts about moving working directories and the .MySCMServerInfo file. Some users are not sure what this file is, what it is for, and what it does. During one of my on-site visits, a user thought that the application was being used incorrectly because all of these strange .MySCMServerInfo files kept popping up in every working directory. Even as the user deleted the .MySCMServerInfo files, they kept coming back!
