We’ve had a really positive response from customers to the new calculated fields in TestTrack 2012. In this post, I want to show you how to take those calculated fields and put them into a Live Chart for your folders dashboard.

Gerhard’s video on using date functions with calculated fields is a great walk-through, if you’re not yet familiar with how to create calculated fields. For this example, I’m going to create a field that calculates the number of days it took to close an issue. You can see the settings below, it’s just a simple diff between the date the issue was created and marked as closed.

Next step is to create the live chart. Go to Create > Report, select the Live Chart type, then click OK. A line chart might work better for you, but I’m going to use a bar chart in this example and I’ll also change Source to just look at Issues. Then click on the X-Axis tab and plot Days to Close by the date issues were created.

Last, you need to set the new calculated field on the Y axis. After you select your field, you can change the settings in the Configure Series area. So I’ve set the bars to be blue, added a green trend line, and set the Y-Value to display the average.

Save your new live chart, and you’re ready to start using it! You can run this report at any time to see the trend on all issues in your project. The cool thing about live charts, though, is that they can also be used in the folder view to provide real-time metrics on a subset of issues. In my sample project, I have a folder structure setup for managing development and testing of two different products. With this live chart in place, it’s just a click of the mouse to see Days to Close metrics for either of those products.
