With the release of Surround SCM 2010 & TestTrack 2010.1, the Seapine License Server now supports logging license usage events. This presents an opportunity to better understand how licenses are being used across your Surround SCM and TestTrack installation.

We’ve had the TT License Monitor tool for quite a while, but it provides a very limited set of data on floating licenses and nothing on named license usage. I’ve been excited about the new logging functionality ever since I saw the first design document, and when it was code complete I immediately put “take it for a spin” on my schedule.

One of our loyal readers read my post on third-party reporting with PostgreSQL, in which I referenced Pentaho’s reporting solution. I received an email pointing me to a new book that is all about Pentaho reporting.

The reason I started to look at Pentaho was my quest to find an open source reporting tool that was compatible with any of the database systems we support.  Since PostgreSQL was the only common denominator that is also open source, PostgreSQL support was critical. A tool like this one can be leveraged for reporting across all of our server-based applications.

Surround SCM ships with PostgreSQL, which can present a challenge when it comes to generating custom reports. The main hurdle has been finding a low cost or free reporting tool. You are getting PostgreSQL with Surround SCM, and who has budget to purchase another tool? If you are not in a “Windows shop”, you will probably stay on PostgreSQL and may not have a reporting tool that works with PostgreSQL.

So what to do?

With the release of TestTrack 2009, we added a really great plug-in architecture to allow for integrating 3rd party reporting tools into your TestTrack installation. Here you’ll find a sample T-SQL query and Excel report that you can use to report on your TestTrack Studio automation rules.

This was written for TestTrack Studio 2008, and won’t work with earlier versions. With 2008, we completely re-did the automation rules table structure so it’s not even close to what you’ll see if you’re using an earlier version. You should upgrade, the 2008 release is really cool!
