If you haven’t discovered the list window enhancements added in TestTrack 2010.1, you definitely should check them out. There are a lot of time-saving improvements, including the ability to customize list window text appearance, shortcuts for working with subsets of items, and more available data.

Developed against TestTrack Pro 2010 and Excel 2007

This tools allows the user to view the defect list from within Excel. Selected records in the list window can be imported into a new worksheet in the Excel workbook.

In my last post, SQL Is Still Your Friend,  I wrote about using SQL to query TestTrack data.  As a continuation of that thought, I wanted to bring a query tool to your attention: Microsoft Excel.  There are plenty of alternatives to using Excel for queries but it has two major advantages: 1) almost everyone uses MS Office so your spreadsheet is portable and 2) after you retrieve the data from the database, you can use the extensive library of Excel functions to work with the data.

Back when I was a co-op in college, I had a dedicated machine where I did all of my testing. I meticulously followed a (usually very long) checklist to make sure that the latest and greatest feature worked as expected. Excel was our bug tracker and we certainly didn’t have anything to handle the testing work itself. The great thing was, we just installed the app and started testing!

Here you’ll find a sample T-SQL query and Excel report that you can use to report on your TestTrack Studio automation rules.


This was written for TestTrack Studio 2008, and won’t work with earlier versions. With 2008, we completely re-did the automation rules table structure so it’s not even close to what you’ll see if you’re using an earlier version. You should upgrade, the 2008 release is really cool!
