Documentation,
Surround SCM on December 13, 2010 There are two ways to run a development project:
- Support concurrent/parallel development by allowing anyone to commit changes to any file at any time.
- Prevent concurrent/parallel development, and the potential for merge complications, by requiring exclusive locks prior to committing changes.
The good news is that Surround SCM supports both models, with the check of a box.

TestTrack on October 29, 2010 TestTrack security groups allow the administrator to configure the level of access a user has. From having access to only specific workflow events to only seeing fields that apply to the user, security groups allow the administrator to ensure that the user is not flooded with options and fields. As your implementation of TestTrack grows, your number of security groups may as well. To easily compare these groups and analyze why one gives users a level of access that another does not, TestTrack 2011 introduces a new report that allows you to compare security groups in a more efficient manner. This video shows you how.

Surround SCM on October 26, 2010 Every once in a while we get feature requests for new columns in the Surround SCM Source View window. Some of the most popular column requests are for the comments that were part of the last check in of a file, the last user who performed a check in, and the last defect number the file was attached to. (By the way, make sure you are submitting your feature requests. That’s the only way we’ll know about them.)
While all feature requests are reviewed, and may be implemented in a future release, we haven’t yet added new columns to the Source View. So, I’m going to show you how to use Surround SCM’s customer fields and triggers to create your own Source View columns.

TestTrack on October 12, 2010 TestTrack 2011 includes enhanced change logging that provides the ability to graphically view changes made to items. You can view the new and old values for each change made to an item on the History tab. Enhanced email change notifications can now highlight exactly what changed, even if it’s only a couple words in a long description field or a simple priority change.

TestTrack TCM on September 30, 2010 Did you know that you can embed your test variant value in test steps? I didn’t! I attended the latest TestTrack SDK Expert Series webinar, and Jeff talked about embedding test variants in test steps. Here’s how it works.

The TestTrack Server, Surround SCM Server, and Seapine License Server are all typically installed behind one or more corporate firewalls, which protect your data from the outside world. If that’s not the case for you, or you simply need another layer of security, you should enable encryption on server-to-server and client-to-server communications to better protect your data. Following is a brief overview of how to enable encryption for each of the servers. Read the Seapine product documentation for a more thorough explanation.

TestTrack TCM on May 25, 2010 One question I get every now and then is how to implement a test sequence in TestTrack TCM. The concept of “before you test Y, you must test X first”.
There isn’t a specific feature in TestTrack to address this but there are actually several ways to implement test sequences. Following is one way.

We recently released version 2010.1 of TestTrack, which contains many new exciting new features. One new feature that I would like to give some love to is Item Mapping Rules. This feature will benefit users who have more than one TestTrack applications, as it allows you to configure how field values are mapped from one application to another.

Do you commonly write test cases for project requirements only to find out that you were looking at the requirement from last week and now the edit boxes are drop-downs and the radio buttons were turned into check boxes? So you have to go back and re-work the test but of course time isn’t in the schedule so you’re spending your evenings updating stale test cases. This huge headache is caused by a simple lack of communication. If someone had told you the requirements changed, you could have easily tracked down the latest copy and avoided the re-work.
