Surround SCM provides several methods for merging. Regardless of the method you use, the merge will either be a server merge or a client (local) merge. Following is more information about the different types of merges and how they work.

With Seapine License Server 2010.1.1 and later, you can configure license pools to manage access to floating licenses. This gives you the ability to maximize use and distribute floating licenses across business units, divisions, or geographic locations. It can also help ensure that specific users, such as developers or testers, always have access to a license.

When I work on product documentation, I frequently sync my working directories with Surround SCM repositories to make sure I am using current files and other writers can access files I have been working on. Surround SCM’s Repository Differences dialog box makes this simple. Each of our user guides is in a project that has several topics (.htm files), images, and other support files. Typically, multiple writers add, modify, and remove files in the same project at the same time. When I check in my work, I view differences for the entire project repository to identify files I need to add to Surround SCM, files that other writers added or updated that I need to get, and files to delete from my working directory because another writer deleted them from the project.

The ability to rollback changes is a basic functionality that any software configuration management tool should have. Surround SCM provides more than one way to rollback changes. You can rollback a file to any prior point in time and you can also choose to rollback a promote or a rebase.

In my last post, SQL Is Still Your Friend, I wrote about using SQL to query TestTrack data. As a continuation of that thought, I wanted to bring a query tool to your attention: Microsoft Excel. There are plenty of alternatives to using Excel for queries but it has two major advantages: 1) almost everyone uses MS Office so your spreadsheet is portable and 2) after you retrieve the data from the database, you can use the extensive library of Excel functions to work with the data.

This post is a follow up to my first one about Surround SCM triggers and executables.
A few years back, while still working in support I conducted an experiment to really comprehend how executables work when they are launched by Surround SCM as part of a trigger. I wanted to know “where” the script runs, what it considers to be the “current” directory, and whether it depended on the location of the executable.

Automation is a key part of any software configuration management tool. Without automation you must manually perform tasks, which only increases the chance of error. Surround SCM includes triggers that allow you to automate many actions, such as sending e-mails, changing a workflow state, and preventing actions under specific circumstances.
Most of the actions available in triggers are visually oriented. For example, to send an e-mail you can select the recipient(s) from a list, configure the e-mail template, etc. However, inevitably you will have needs beyond what is offered out of the box. In those situations you may want to consider running an executable through the trigger mechanism.

We recently released an upgrade to our software configuration management solution, Surround SCM. A few of the more notable new features in Surround SCM 2009.1 are the following:
- Support for storing all data in Oracle databases. Surround SCM now supports Oracle, MS SQL Server, and PostgreSQL as data storage options.
- Windows Explorer and Mac Finder integration, which lets you access Surround SCM commands directly from the operating system without launching the Surround client.
- Microsoft Office 2007 integration so you can manage documents in Surround SCM directly from Office 2007.
- Dreamweaver CS4 integration lets you manage Web site and Web application assets in Surround SCM without leaving the Dreamweaver CS4 IDE.
Here is a more complete list of the new features in Surround SCM 2009.1.
Share on Technorati . del.icio.us . Digg . Reddit . Slashdot . Facebook . StumbleUponRecently there have been a couple posts about moving working directories and the .MySCMServerInfo file. Some users are not sure what this file is, what it is for, and what it does. During one of my on-site visits, a user thought that the application was being used incorrectly because all of these strange .MySCMServerInfo files kept popping up in every working directory. Even as the user deleted the .MySCMServerInfo files, they kept coming back!
