Time tracking in TestTrack is a feature that has been written about on this blog here and there. Time tracking is a pretty straightforward concept. You estimate how long it will take to complete a task and, as you progress, you report on how much effort you have put in and how much time you think there is left to complete the task.

However, time tracking in TestTrack TCM can be tricky because there are two objects, the test case and the test run, to track time for. It can be confusing to know which object you are placing an estimate on and what it really means.

TestTrack’s cumulative flow chart and folder task board reports group items in a selected folder into Not Started, In Progress, Done, and Accepted categories. At first glance, you may think the categories are related to an item’s workflow state, but they are not.

While planning the TestTrack 2010.1 release, we talked to a variety of customers and soon realized that every team uses story points slightly differently. Most commonly, the teams use story points as a high-level estimate of the difficulty of a specific task or work item. TestTrack is flexible in allowing you to manage stories in a variety of ways, we’ve outlined a straight-forward process here to get you started. As you become familiar with using story points, feel free to tweak your TestTrack configuration to better meet the need of your team.
